A perfect example of the dangers of buying drugs on the Internet
Young Cork DJ died after taking drugs he bought on the internet
A young disc jockey in good health suffered a massive heart-attack after taking amphetamines and a Viagra-like drug he purchased over the internet.
John ‘Broz’ Brosnan (35) walked from his home to a Cork hospital after complaining of chest pains — but suffered a massive coronary attack and died just two hours later.
Mr Brosnan — who received numerous awards from Irish gay and lesbian groups for his fearless campaigning for same-sex couples — had started using amphetamines or ‘speed’ after living for a time in the Netherlands.
Speaking after the Cork Coroner’s inquest, Mr Brosnan’s partner Michael Nason told the Irish Independent: “We were together for 18 years — I am still devastated.”
Mr Brosnan was one of Cork’s highest profile DJs and was part of popular combo ‘Broz & Angi’ as well as fronting the disco-soul group Sexual Chocolate.
Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane heard that on September 30, 2011, Mr Brosnan took amphetamines and a Viagra-like drug called ‘Kamagra’.
At the time, Mr Brosnan had been suffering with a cold and a sore throat. Shortly before 4am, he told Mr Nason that he had chest pains and numbness in his hands and arms.
They then walked from their Douglas Street home in Cork city centre to the nearby South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH).
An electro-cardiogram indicated that Mr Brosnan had suffered a heart attack — and, by 5am, his condition deteriorated in the emergency department.
He suffered a seizure before later collapsing in front of his partner. Doctors were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 6.10am.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster said a post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Brosnan had chronic hardening of his coronary artery and a large thrombosis or clot.
She said that studies into amphetamine use have shown a high risk of both hardening of the arteries and clots.
Blood tests revealed Mr Brosnan had an amphetamine concentration of 0.74micrograms — well into the fatal range of between 0.5 and 1 microgram.
Party: She said it was unclear what role, if any, the Viagra-like drug had played in the incident. Tests showed that the product — purchased over the internet — was not contaminated.
Mr Nason said Mr Brosnan had used amphetamines first when they lived in the Netherlands. The inquest noted that the DJ was just 35 and was otherwise fit and healthy.
The jury returned a verdict of death by misadventure.
Mr Brosnan’s untimely death rocked both the Cork music scene and the gay-lesbian community.
“Music has always been a powerful weapon in breaking down all prejudices and with the likes of Broz bringing the music, we were always guaranteed a great party,” one tribute webpage to Mr Brosnan said.
Mr Brosnan’s family declined to comment after the inquest.
