THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ARMAGH Cardinal Sean Brady says his archdiocese of Armagh has launched an official investigation into how a parish priest inadvertently showed pornographic images to a group of parents at a primary school last week.
Fr Martin McVeigh was setting up a PowerPoint presentation in the school last week, at a presentation to the parents of the First Communion class at a school in Co Tyrone.
It was reported that the pictures – depicting gay pornography – appeared on the screen after the priest inserted a USB key containing his presentation.
The Ulster Herald newspaper quoted Fr McVeigh as saying the images could be “legitimately explained”, but that he did not know how the images had appeared on the computer.
It added today that McVeigh did not officiate at weekend Masses for Palm Sunday, leading planned protests outside his church at Pomeroy in Co Tyrone to be abandoned.
In a statement, diocesan archbishop Sean Brady said the imagery had been “immediately removed” from the screen after it was shown, and that the priest said he had “no knowledge of the offending imagery”.
He added that the archdiocese had immediately sought the advice of local police who said that, on the basis of the evidence available at the time, no crime had been committed.
“The priest is co-operating with an investigation of the matter on the part of the Archdiocese,” Brady said.
Galway Mayor’s son pleads guilty to violent sex assault on nurse in alleyway
Brian Maher (24) a son of the Mayor of Galway Michael Maher (above) who violently sexually assaulted a nurse in a laneway, causing her severe head injuries, will be sentenced in June.
Brian Maher (24), of Clostoken, Loughrea, Co Galway, pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and assault causing harm on the October 16, 2010.
Maher is the son of current Galway County Mayor, Fine Gael’s Michael Maher. Mr Maher declined to comment on the matter last night.
The Central Criminal Court heard that the 38-year-old victim was making her way home from a night out with friends in Galway city when Maher grabbed her by the neck, pulled her into an alleyway and hit her head off a wall and off the ground.
Witnesses living near the scene described seeing a woman lying on the ground struggling and screaming with a man crouched above her punching her repeatedly in the face and head.
The victim suffered a broken nose, a fractured cheekbone, vaginal bruising, abrasions and lacerations. Her tooth was knocked out and she briefly lost consciousness.
Garda David Clarke described seeing a woman bleeding heavily from the head in a very distressed state, with her jeans and underwear torn and pulled down her legs.
Maher was chased by Garda Gerard Morrissey, who said he was “extremely aggressive and pumped with adrenalin”. The garda eventually pepper-sprayed him.
Maher, who had consumed alcohol and cocaine on the night, said the combination of drink and drugs made him “crazy”.
Maher has been registered as a sex offender and remanded in custody until his sentencing on June 18.
A Tragedy for Tommy Fleming as his parents die within hours of each other
Ireland’s country singer Tommy Fleming has been left heartbroken after both of his parents die within hours of each another.
The star cut short his UK tour to rush to the family home in Aclare, Co Sligo, last week after learning that his mum Annie (83) was seriously ill.
He was by her bedside for a week before she passed away peacefully on Friday morning at Sligo General Hospital.
However, tragically, Tommy was dealt a double blow when his father Paddy (86) died just a few hours later.
The couple had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary only two weeks ago.
Annie’s funeral was originally due to take place yesterday — but was moved to today so she could be buried alongside her husband.
The 40-year-old singer said his parents had been devoted to each other, and to their family, all of their lives.
Mr Fleming rose to fame in the early 1990s after he was asked to tour the US with Phil Coulter. He soon established himself as a solo artist and found great success singing traditional Irish music.
The singer cheated death himself when he broke his neck in a road-traffic accident on November 26, 1998. He had fallen asleep behind the wheel on the way home from a gig and ploughed into a tree.
Mr Fleming, who lives in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, with his wife Tina, spent a year and a half recovering from the accident.
The singer, who is the youngest of six siblings, attributes his talent and love of music to his late parents.
Devoted: His father, a farmer, had a huge record collection, which included everything from Shirley Bassey to the Carpenters to Ceili bands.
“They were so devoted to each other and did everything for us throughout their lives,” Mr Fleming said.
“Everyone is heartbroken. It’s tragic that they have both died within such a short space of time of each other, but in a way it is fitting that they are together now,” he added.
Earlier this week, he revealed how tough it was in a post onFacebook. “It has been a very tough week for my family and I cannot construct a word or sentence that describes how all this feels,” he wrote.
A message on his website stated: “Tommy and his family very much appreciate your love and support at this difficult time. Thank you all for your kind messages and thoughts.”
The couple will be buried together after funeral Mass at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Kilmactigue, Sligo, today, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
