A sad state of affairs story Blog by Donie

A 12 year old SCHOOLGIRL found drunk on a letterkenny street, is treated in hospital

A 12-year-old schoolgirl had to be treated in Letterkenny hospital after being found drunk on the main street (above right picture).
The shocking incident has caused alarm among gardaí and medical staff after the child was discovered on Letterkenny’s Main Street on Saturday evening.
The schoolgirl had earlier tried to enter a premises in the town but was refused.
She had already consumed alcohol and had tried to smuggle more into the premises but was apprehended by a staff member.
She was treated at Letterkenny General Hospital and later discharged.
Gardaí are investigating.
Staff at Letterkenny General Hospital have been forced to cope with an increase in alcohol related situations in its emergency department.
Last October, the hospital was forced to treat 24 patients in one evening, who were admitted due to problems related to alcohol consumption.
Eamon O’Kane of the North West Alcohol Forum said statistics show that on average 20 people under the age of 18 are being admitted to hospital each month as a result of alcohol. He said he has spoken to gardaí who have treated 10-year-olds for being drunk.
“That might not seem like a lot but they are the ones that we know about.
“There is no magic solution for parents but as a society we must continue to ensure that we shake off this culture that you have to drink to have a good time which many young people believe,” he said.
