Chaps, there’s an upside to having low fertility! According to a new Swedish study less fertile men are less likely to get prostate cancer.
The study of 900 men has apparently shown that the lower the sperm counts the less the likelihood of getting prostate cancer. Those with lower fertility were found to be as much as half as likely to develop the cancer.
Researchers say they have also found a genetic connection in the study which could lead to new treatments and even better screening.
“I think they are incredibly exciting, they lie as a foundation for new research,” Dr. Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman at Lund University toldSverige’s Radio. The researcher compared 450 men with prostate cancer with the same number of healthy men.
The scientists believe that a large number of men could be getting treated for prostate cancer unnecessarily. Their research may help to distinguish the group of men who are at risk of developing the aggressive form of prostate cancer.
The research team say that research into prostate cancer is lagging far behind breast cancer because the scientific community has focused mainly on the latter.
