Pensioners who overpaid tax will be repaid by end of the month: Says Ombudsman
PENSIONERS who have overpaid tax will be refunded by the end of the month, Pensions Ombudsman Paul Kenny confirmed today.
Mr Kenny said the decision to clear up the matter as soon as possible was decided in consultation with the Revenue Commission with whom he met this morning.
Over 150,000 pensioners received letters about their tax liabilities last week after the Revenue received new information from the Department of Social Protection.
The situation caused massive confusion amongst many pensioners.
The Revenue has confirmed that 15,000 people received letters telling them they could have tax deducted although their income didn’t reach the payment threshold.
“The Revenue Commissioners is already working on tax exemption certificates and they will be sent out shortly,” he said.
“The aim is that the repayments will be made by the end of the month,” he added although it is not yet clear how many pensioners have overpaid
He also said that in cases where pensioners are liable to pay tax, they will be given time to make payments.
“This will be spread as evenly as possible over 2012,” he added.
Revenue has come in for strong criticism over its handling of the affair while support groups for the elderly said pensioners should have been warned about the changes.
